2. THE SHOWS CHARACTERS

2.1 Principal Characters

  • Alvin Corbet (50 – 65 years) – Bar manager and MC for the open-mic night. Alvin is a sharply dressed, larger than life host. He introduces the acts, and makes all the announcements. He tells jokes, creates the atmosphere and keeps the show going. Everybody loves Alvin. We later find out that, underneath the carefree surface, Alvin is not what he seems. A good man, haunted by his own demons. Requirements: Strong singing voice, experienced actor, with the ability to portray both humour and pathos.
  • Toby (25 – 30 years) – An extraordinarily gifted guitarist, vocalist and songwriter. He had an abusive mother, and remains scarred by the constant undermining of his confidence. He is now a barman at Resolution and always looks forward to open-mic night. Nobody knows his ‘musical’ secret – he’s just the barman, and he would never have the confidence to perform for them. Toby is the male love interest in the show. Requirements: Strong singing voice, experienced actor. Will need to portray a mixture of socially comfortable and shy. Some basic guitar skills needed.
  • Kelly (25 – 30 years) – The choir’s chief mutineer. A socially confident young lady, Kelly is at constant loggerheads with Dorothy the choir mistress. Kelly is a dental nurse by day but dislikes her job. She has a secret desire to pack it in and travel the world. Kelly and barman Toby become the show’s love interest. Requirements: Strong singing voice, experienced actor. Will need to portray ‘flirty’ authentically.
  • Joe (20 – 25 years) – A perennial churchgoer, the only songs he will perform are the gospel songs he sings in church. Dad left when he was a young and mum raised him on her own. He has always been a loner and others tend to perceive him as strange. He had a childhood filled with bullying.  When his mum dies unexpectedly, a long-awaited change in Joe’s identity is triggered. Requirements: Strong singing voice, experienced actor. Will need to portray transgender female authentically.
  • Gabby Dawson-Jones (40 – 55 years) – Head-Teacher of a local primary school. She was brought up on the music of Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette and Patsy Cline. Gabby has always had a love of country music and has a voice to match. The only thing that allowed her to get over her breakdown is her music. She discovered Resolution and her weekly visits there are her salvation. Requirements: Strong singing voice, experienced actor. Will need to portray wisdom with a strong motherly approach.
  • Zak-Attak (18 years) – Writes and records songs in his bedroom and is becoming an international success on TikTok, with his own particular brand of techno. He has a strong relationship with his adopted sister Jem. She writes the lyrics to go with his music. Requirements: Strong singing voice, experienced actor. Will need to portray Gen-z teen with an endearing older-brotherly warmth. Must have a sense of comedy timing.
  • Jem-I’m-a-Rhymer (16 years) – Jem is Zak’s younger sister. She has a selective mutism and can’t speak in public, due to some previous unspecified trauma. She writes the lyrics to Zak’s tunes. She and Zak are close. Requirements: Strong singing voice. Will need to be a good physical actor who can portray emotion without words. Must have dancing skills.
  • Colin Taylor (70 – 80 years) – a regular at Resolution, Colin has been involved in the music industry since he was a young man and is always desperate to perform at Resolution. However, he is never taken seriously by the other regulars and is constantly being put off performing. Unbeknown to anyone else, Colin has been diagnosed with Motor Neurons Disease (MND), which is why he is unable to play the piano properly anymore. Requirements: Strong singing voice, experienced actor. Will need to portray both comedically and with pathos. Some basic piano skills would be helpful.
  • Dorothy (50 – 70 years) – the choir-leader, who thinks that anything after 1893 is not worth the paper it was written on. She will tolerate some modern music – a few Beatles songs and the odd Andy Williams maybe, but even that feels like a compromise. She is also foster-mother to both Zak and Jem. Requirements: Strong singing voice, experienced actor. Will need to portray strict, over the top feistiness with a light undercurrent of warmth at times.
